The auspicious Vaishaka Maasa is on today. See how soon the time flies, we are already crossed one month in the new Manmatha Samvatsara. The very auspicious day in this month is the AKSHAYA TRITIYA day. It is observed on 21-Apr-15 this year.
Akshaya indicates ‘that which does no diminish’. It means that punya earned on this day by perfoming yajna, daana etc. will multiple a hundred times.
It is one ‘Swayamssidda’ auspicious day. There are 3 1/2 muhoorthas termed as ‘Swayamsidda’ in a year. Vijayadashami, Yugaadi and Akshaya Triteeya and the first half day of Bali Padya. On these days one need not worry about the auspiciousness in Vaara Nakshatra, Karana. We can perform auspicious things like Upanayana, Aksharaabhyaasa, Annaprashana etc. without referring the Panchanga. Such is the significance of these days.
Also according to traditional history the day of Akshaya Tritiya is famous because of:-
- On Akshaya Trititya day snaana, japa, daana all will give Akshaya phala.
- It is on this day that Sri Vedavyasa Devaru began his composition of Sri Mahabharatha.
- It is no this day that Paandavas received Akshaya Paathara from Sri Soorya Narayana.
- It is on this day Sudama(Kuchela) visited Lord Sri Krishna carrying Avalakki.
- As per traditional Hindu astrology, the Sun(Surya) and Moon(Chandra) are astrologically believed to be at their most exalted position on this day.
Buying of Gold and Jewellery items is certainly not listed in the Vedic scripts. These are all the ploy and gimmicks made by the vested interests to hard-sell their product to the gullible in the name of religious faith. Sadly purity, piety & all good have been commercialized. Sure, the industry related advertisements are making the general public crazy for buying. The only auspicious day to buy gold ornaments stated to be of Guru-Pushya day i.e. when Pushya nakshatra falls on any Thursday in any month. And certainly not on Akshaya Trithiya day. Sri Srimushnam Nagarajachar has cautioned us in April issue that this day is not to be wasted by spending our time in the bazaar streets, no matter what the media and papers say. Our Shaastras say that on this day, one has to do yajna and daana which makes their punya akshaya. Each second of Akshaya Tritiya is auspicious. This is the time to put in our best to get eternal benefits and not to stand in line in any shop in our city.
And also as per tradition, “One viewing an icon of the Lord adorned with sandalwood paste on the third day in the bright half of VaishAka attains the abode of LordAchyuta”. It is very common on Akshaya TritIya for devout mAdhvas to decorate the brindAvanas of Madhva ascetics like Rayaru with sandalwood paste and offer worship.
