Chaturmasya : Shakavratha – 19Jul to 16Aug13

Hare Srinivasa,

The auspicious Chaturmasa is starting today and we are in the 1st month of the four months, which is known as the Shakavratha. This Vratha needs to be observed from Ashada Shudda Ekadashi to Shravana Shudda Dashami.

Sankalpa Mantra:

shaakavRataM mayaadEva gRuhItaM puratastava |

nirviGnaM siddhimaayaatu prasaadaat tava kEshava
||

During this period, we need to avoid the following items:

Vegetables to be avoided – Plant based food – All Vegetables, Fruits, plant leaves, stems, branches, etc to be avoided. Dry Chillies, Green Chillies not to be used.

We can take all types of Dalls, (G.dall after Teekarayara Panchami), Mango fruit, Jeera, Pepper, Milk, Curds, Ghee, Honey, Mustard not permitted (For Rayara Mutt Mustard is permitted – as sampradaya)

    Is Rice and wheat OK to consume? Most of the famiies I am aware of eat normal vege food during the year over generations. Some eat upma or idly or chapathi on Ekadasi days (given full grain rice should not be consumed).

    Question: In order to observe Chathur masya vratha, how one is trained or should be trained? What is the prescription from the Acharyas. Whereas mutt staff has activities properly planned for these four months and vairagya imbibed in them by training, how about us – the commoners- who have to perform numerous de-energizing daily activities can oberve and survive the four months as prescribed?

    I know for sure that eating small quantities food at properly distributed time keeps my physical system intact and I have seen people pumping a lot in one sitting subjecting the body parts to extreme strain- sometimes damaging them.

    Any suggestions or comments on the above.
    R Rao
